eBay my way to a PS3 – GameCube Edition

October 15th, 2008 Tengaport

Here’s my plan for picking up a PS3, if I can raise the necessary funds by selling off some old stuff then I’ll buy one regardless of if I have the time to actually play it. With that goal now set I started going through my game drawer to separate things into ‘what goes’ and ‘what stays’ piles. First up on the chopping block, is the GameCube pile.

My GameCube is in the closet in our guest room, and has been there since we moved into our house (about two years ago). I think it’s safe at this point to declare the console legally dead. I had some good moments with the ‘cube, but I honestly don’t see myself going back to it anytime soon. So with that, everything in the GameCube pile (including the console) is good to go.

There probably isn’t much value at all to these games, aside from perhaps the The Legend of Zelda: Collectors Edition and Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Those are going to head to eBay (along with the system itself), while the rest will end up as Goozex fodder. Perhaps I can parlay these low point games into something to eventually sell on eBay.

Perhaps I’ll be able to rake in around $50 or so. Not much, but it’s $50 closer to a PS3. I’ll post actual amounts raised once my auctions end.
So there you have it, the first step in my journey to eBay my way to a PS3

Mass Effect (Xbox 360) Goozex.com

August 18th, 2008 Tengaport

Mass Effect was truly tough to part with, but alas I’m not sure when I would ever get back to the game and the crew of the Normandy. This game was flat-out awesome in my opinion. I’m not a big RPG gamer, but there was plenty of action and story to keep me glued to Mass Effect for multiple playthroughs.

I don’t know why Bioshock got lauded as a game with ‘moral choices’ as deciding whether or not to harvest Little Sisters paled in comparison to the choices I had to make in Mass Effect. When I was confronted by two of the games leading females, and forced to choose between them – that was when I realized just how incredible this game was.

As a kid, two of my favorite things for playtime were pretending to captain my own space ship, and also drive my own space buggy. Mass Effect nailed both. I enjoyed strolling around the Normandy, feeling like mr. big shot since the ship was at my disposal – as well as cruising around the surface of a planet in the Mako.

Mass Effect may not have been perfect, but despite its flaws it is still ‘awesome’. Had I had the time I would undoubtedly go back for more – but alas, I bid adieu to Mass Effect for now and hope for an eventual sequel.

GTA: Vice City Stories (Goozex.com)

July 14th, 2008 Tengaport

I’m saying goodbye to Vic and GTA: Vice City Stories today. I picked this game up in anticipation of GTAIV to see what the hype was all about. I had never played a GTA game before, so Vice City Stories was my first venture into Rockstar’s infamous territory.

I didn’t get too far into the game before GTAIV was released and I left Vic for the glitz and glamor of Liberty City. What I did see of Vice City however opened my eyes to the humor and spectacle that is the GTA series. I enjoyed the game much more than I anticipated, and while I haven’t set foot in Liberty City for a while, I really need to check back in with Nico and see what’s been going on.

But now I must leave Vice City for good. It was a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.

Dark Sector (Xbox 360) (Goozex.com)

June 26th, 2008 Tengaport

I’m having some heavy second thoughts about letting this game go. I suppose I can always pick it up again (for cheap) if I feel the urge to run through it again though. Best to just grab the 1000 points while the getting is good.

My take on Dark Sector is “An excellent ‘dark’ sci-fi action game”.

Take game play mechanics from Gears of War, throw them into Resident Evil environments and slap a little dash of Bioshock storytelling on top and you’ve got the idea of what Dark Sector is all about. The game would’ve benefited from a little polish around the ends, but as an action game it more than delivers. Dual wielding a firearm and the glaive gives Dark Sector a fresh feel as opposed to countless other action games.

Hopefully there will be an eventual sequel, as I’d love to someday step back into the role as super bad-ass secret agent type guy. For $40 and under the game is worth every penny.

Rainbow Six 3 (Goozex.com)

May 6th, 2008 Tengaport

Here is another game I can’t comment on as I barely did more than remove the shrink wrap from it. I picked this up for I believe $8 at a Toys R Us that was going out of business. I picked up two copies actually, and gave one away thinking that would spur some multiplayer but it never materialized. That means this game has sat gathering dust since the day I brought it home.

Not anymore as it is now en route to it’s new owner via Goozex. The game was only worth a whopping 100 points, but thats more good that it was doing me sitting in the back of my game drawer.

So long Rainbow Six 3, I wish I could say you will be missed, but… well… you know how it is.

Ninja Gaiden Black (Goozex.com)

April 28th, 2008 Tengaport

At this point I think it’s safe to say I’m never going to get around to playing Ninja Gaiden Black. I’ve tried several times, and had made some progress, but I have to face facts that it’s just not going to happen.

I somehow missed the boat with Ninja Gaiden Black, but I don’t plan on repeating the error when Ninja Gaiden II comes out for the 360 in a few months.

Until then, goodbye Ryu – see you in all your HD glory soon.

Turok (Goozex.com)

April 28th, 2008 Tengaport

Today I’m shipping out Turok, to Hawaii of all places (ALOHA!).

I’ve said before, the game itself isn’t terrible however it’s not great either. Turok lives in the middleground of ‘just okay’. It has a few things going for it such as the lush environments, the bow & arrow and the knife and frickin dinosaurs! Unfortunately, it has a bit too much working against it, such as ‘where the hell am i supposed to go’ levels, uber-dark levels, frustrating checkpoints, and just being a little too mediocre.

I had a good time playing the game (what I wasn’t cursing checkpoint respawns) but it’s hard to recommend with so many other higher-quality titles available.

My advice would be to wait for a gaming drought and pick the game up for $20 and you’ll enjoy it much more than those who shelled out the full $60.

Adios Turok,

enjoy Hawaii!

Tom Raider: Legend (360) Goozex.com

March 24th, 2008 Tengaport

To be honest, this game was ok. I was hoping for some nostalgic Tomb Raider moments with Legend but they just weren’t there. The game isn’t bad by any stretch, it just didn’t feel or play like I would expect a current-gen Tomb Raider to handle. No biggie, I stuck with Lara until the end of this adventure but it was mostly for the easy achievement points. On the MEH scale I’d put Tomb Raider: Legend at around a 5 mehs out of 10

Chili Con Carnage PSP (Goozex.com)

March 24th, 2008 Tengaport

Today I’m saying goodbye to Chili Con Carnage. A fun yet mildly offensive PSP game. While I didn’t finish the game, I would still say it’s quite an underrated PSP gem. My only big complaint was the lack of strafing in the control scheme. I feel like I’m letting this one go a bit too early, but in all honestly I’m not sure if I’ll ever get back to it at this point.

Good times, adios Chili Con Carnage! You will be missed.

Currently Playing (and to be played) Pile

March 14th, 2008 Tengaport

Too many games, too little time.

I was all set to rush out to the store this week to pick up Condemned 2: Bloodshot for the Xbox 360. That was until it dawned on me that I’ve got a mountain of games at home already waiting to be played. As much as I am jumping out of my seat to play Condemned I just didn’t see the sense in adding to my backlog at the moment. I’m doing my best to limit myself to one new game (per system) but as you can see in the photo above I’m not doing a terribly good job.

On the DS I’m still commanding my army in Advance Wars: Days of Ruin and solving brain teasers with Professor Layton. The PSP has me in charge of my Patapon soldiers while Kratos waits for me to get him out of Hades and Silent Hill beckons me to return. On the 360 things are a little more complicated:

I just started playing Mass Effect – and while I think the controls are shit, I’m drawn in by the story, environments and damn fine voice work. It’s feel pretty epic, even though I’m only a few hours in.

Turok is a unfortunate Goozex request that I didn’t expect to get anytime soon. I liked the demo somewhat, and I’ll give it a honest try before re-Goozexing.

Call of Duty 4 has the #1 spot when it comes to multiplayer. I finished the campaign mode and had quite an enjoyable time doing so. There is still that damn Mile High Club achievement, but I’m not so confident it’s ever going to happen for me.

The Orange Box still has so much love to give, but I’m unfortunately not giving it the chance. I swore I would finish Half Life 2 this time around, but I haven’t made it very far at all yet. Portal was great, but has long been bested, and while I think Team Fortress 2 is fantastic I haven’t fired it up in some time.

I completely forgot about Ace Combat 6. I really need to jump back into the cockpit and take to the skies. I’ll probably play through the campaign and then trade it away. I’m not sure if the new co-op missions are out, and while the two included on the disc were fun I don’t think I’ll be putting any more money into this game.

I’m angry at Lego Star Wars right now, and it’s not even the game’s fault. I was working through the game last weekend during some heavy rain and high winds. During which time our power kept cutting out on us. Like a fool, each time the power would come back on I fired up the game and tried to pick up the pieces. And 3 times while my character was loaded with lego studs the power cut out again. After that I called it quits and even though our power is back I have yet to try again.

Not sure what to say really about Burnout Paradise. I wish I enjoyed it more than I do, but the truth is I just can’t get into it. Sure I can admire the open world, but it’s not the Burnout Experience I was looking for. I miss the neck and neck races and the constant takedowns, but it’s just not the same in Paradise City. This one is first up on the chopping block for me…
